Alzheimer’s clue

OVER-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen can help slow the progress of
Alzheimer鈥檚, but only at such high doses that they can be toxic. Now
neuroscientist Edward Koo from the University of California at San Diego has
found that the drug鈥檚 Alzheimer鈥檚-beating properties work via a completely
separate pathway from its anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects (
Nature, vol 414, p 212). This raises the hope that scientists may be able
to design molecules optimised for fighting Alzheimer鈥檚 but without the harmful
side effects.
