Celera Genomics says it has cracked the genetic code of the mouse. But the
Maryland company, which announced last June that it had completed the human
sequence, will only show its data to paying subscribers. 鈥淲e will not publish
this in the same way as we did with the human genome,鈥 says spokeswoman Heather
Kowalski. 鈥淭he mouse genome will not be freely available.鈥 A publicly funded
consortium is also sequencing the mouse genome, which is valuable because it is
so similar to the human genome. 鈥淭he mouse is the Rosetta stone in terms of
better understanding the human genome,鈥 says Kowalski.
