CHILDREN born to older fathers have a higher risk of developing
schizophrenia, according to a joint study from New York University, Columbia
University鈥檚 College of Physicians and Surgeons and Israel鈥檚 Ministry of

The study is the first to link a father鈥檚 age to a psychiatric illness. The
researchers found that children fathered by men older than 50 were three times
as likely to have schizophrenia as those whose fathers were aged 25 or less.
Overall, 27 per cent of the schizophrenia cases studied could be attributed to
their father鈥檚 age.
The work will appear in a future issue of Archives of General
Psychiatry.
