Thomas Robinson of Glamorgan is trying to patent (GB2334292) a simple idea
that could save lives, especially for unskilled do-it-yourself roofers or aerial
and satellite dish installers. Before any ladder is used, the would-be climber
throws a ball connected to a line over the roof. The line is pulled tight from
the other side of the house to lift up a saddle unit, which sits astride the
ridge. Lines from each side of the saddle are then fed through windows on
opposite sides of the house and tied to secure the saddle. An inertia reel belt
hangs from the saddle and locks the climber tightly if they fall, just as a seat
belt locks if pulled too quickly.
