After Darwin is the script of Timberlake Wertenbaker鈥檚 play (first produced
at London鈥檚 Hampstead Theatre this July). It is really two plays: one tells of
the clash between science and religion鈥擠arwin versus the Beagle鈥檚 captain,
Fitzroy. The other deals with the actors and author of the play and its
director, living in a world fundamentally affected by Darwin鈥檚 ideas. Successful
on stage, it must have been more approachable there. A reading doesn鈥檛 do it
