THE Earth is ringing like a bell, and no one knows why.
Geologists thought that earthquakes caused all the Earth鈥檚 subtle vibrations.
To test this, scientists at Nagoya University in Japan took seismograms from
real earthquakes and used them to create synthetic earthquakes in a computer
model.
The model showed earthquakes can鈥檛 account for the Earth鈥檚 continuous wobble
in which it deforms every 3 to 8 minutes (Science, vol 279, p 2089).
The researchers think variations in wind and air pressure may be the cause.
