LARGE nature reserves cost less per hectare to maintain and operate than smaller protected areas, according to a study of forests in China.
The UN Global Environment Facility鈥檚 project office in the Chinese Ministry of Forestry in Beijing compared 28 protected forests of different sizes. The results, revealed at last week鈥檚 meeting of the Society for Conservation Biology in Victoria, British Columbia, show that larger protected areas had fewer employees and lower operating costs per hectare.
