Sam Ting, the American physicist who walked out on the team planning
construction of America鈥檚 Superconducting Supercollider, has joined the
project鈥檚 European rival.
When he left, Ting took with him blueprints for his $700 million L*
detector, designed to locate the presence of subatomic particles (This Week,
18 May). CERN, the particle physics centre in Geneva, is negotiating with
Ting to build the L* for its Large Hadron Collider.
