POLAND is likely to become the first Eastern European nation to be accepted
as a full member of CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in
Geneva.
Sources at CERN say that Poland鈥檚 application is expected soon. At present,
it is one of three observer nations at CERN. As a full member, it will be
able to influence the nature of the experiments carried out on the laboratory鈥檚
particle accelerators, and decide how many scientists to send to Geneva.
Poland鈥檚 move follows a visit to CERN earlier this year by the country鈥檚
president, General Jaruzelski.
